I’d been meaning to check out Blue Breeze Inn at Ponsonby Central for a while, anytime that I’ve walked past it has always been packed so I was intrigued to find out why it was so popular. I headed along last week with Che, Katherine and Ben before we all went to the launch of Dan Aykroyd’s vodka, Crystal Head Vodka (more on that later).
The menu is described as Pacific Chinese, a kiwi twist on Chinese food by chef Che Barrington who previously opened MooChowChow. The atmosphere is energetic and the set up allows natural light to just pour in, perfect on a warm sunny evening. Meals are made to share so ideal if going with a bunch of mates. I think this will be the go to spot for many during the summer months.
We started off with some refreshing cocktails while we perused the menu, most of the table had the Elixir of Life potion which was a mix of rum, sugarcane, lime and pineapple – delicious! First up we had the cured salmon salad which came with crispy wonton pieces, it was freshly tossed right when it arrived at the table, a nice light way to start our meal. This was followed by prawn and coriander dumplings and mushroom wontons, these weren’t as full of flavour as I had hoped. However, the steamed buns with crispy chicken arrived which were really tasty and the buns were so soft, my favourite item on the menu for sure. For our main we had the roast duck which was a take on the traditional Peking duck style.
Unfortunately I couldn’t fit room for dessert so there’s an excuse for me to go back, also I’m definitely going to order the whole fresh coconut drink next time!
After dinner we all headed along to the Crystal Head Vodka launch held at Tom Tom bar where we were able to meet and get a photo with part owner of the brand, Dan Aykroyd!
